Tips for Using a Pot Filler

Pot fillers are unique kitchen faucets installed away from the normal placement at the sink. These fixtures are usually installed right over a stovetop or range so home cooks can fill large pots in place rather than carrying them back and forth from the sink. Anyone who cooks at home regularly, especially pasta lovers, will appreciate this fun kitchen accessory. Here are four tips to help homeowners get the most out of pot filler faucets.
For maximum use of a pot filler, look for a model offering 360-degree rotation. This kind of faucet will extend to both sides of a range and should cover all the spots that might hold a pot, even on a model with six burners. If the faucet will be installed on a kitchen island or other countertop place, the full rotation allows for unusual uses like filling buckets or pet dishes over the edge of the counter.
Pot filler faucets come in both wall-mounted and counter-mounted configurations. Pick the right placement based on where the water is needed the most. Many homeowners choose a wall-mount model and place it directly over the stove or range, while others choose a central counter location that allows the faucet to reach the sink and the stove. Don’t forget about adding a freestanding counter-mounted faucet to a kitchen island that features a range as well.
Since the pot filler faucet is only designed to fill a stockpot and to do so quickly, they tend to offer a much higher flow rate than a typical sink faucet. Expect at least 3 to 4 gallons per minute from a pot filler, while a standard low-flow kitchen faucet produces only around 1.5 to 2 gallons per minute. This results in a faster fill, but it can also cause splashing if the water is turned on too quickly.
Choosing center, left, or right placement over a range or stovetop depends largely on the width and depth of the stove. Assuming a pot filler with a 360- or 180-degree rotation, choose a model with a total extended length that reaches every edge of the range. An oversized range with six to eight burners may need a 30 inch or longer pot filler faucet for full coverage.
