How to Remove a Tub Spout

How to Remove a Tub Spout

As a homeowner, there are several reasons why you might need to replace your bathtub spout. Your spout might be old and corroded or you might need a style upgrade. At Kingston Brass, we design high-quality tub spouts. If you are remodeling your bathroom or replacing a worn-out bathtub spout, start your project by browsing our vast selection of  tub spouts.

Step 1: Determine the Bathtub Spout Type

Before you can begin the process of removing a tub spout, you need to determine which type of spout you have. There are two common spout styles. One is a diverter, which features a lever or pull that allows you to switch your water flow from the tub faucet to the showerhead. The second type of bathtub faucet is a non-diverter. This is a minimalistic style that only allows for water to flow from the spout itself. A non-diverter tub spout is more commonly seen in tubs without a showerhead and when the shower valve includes an integral diverter. When it comes to removal, the difference between a non-diverter and diverter only concerns which style of tub spout you purchase to replace the one you remove.

The most important factor in the removal of your bathtub faucet is the attachment style. Generally, most tub faucets are either slip-on or threaded. Slip-on involves a screw, commonly referred to as a setscrew, whereas a threaded faucet is screwed into the wall.

Step 2: Remove Your Tub Spout Based Upon Type

Once you determine what type of tub spout your bathroom features, you will want to follow the appropriate removal steps found below.

Removing a Slip-On Spout

Start by looking for any caulking or sealant around the faucet. Utilize a knife or razor to remove the sealant.

Next, find the screw that is holding the faucet into place. Generally, this screw will be located on the bottom of the spout. You will need to remove the screw by using the appropriate wrench. Most commonly, this will require an Allen wrench.

After you remove the screw, pull the bathtub spout out from the wall.

Now you are ready to replace the old faucet with a new bathtub spout.

Removing a Threaded Tub Spout

If you have a threaded tub spout, you’re in luck. These bathtub spouts are extremely simple to remove. Using a large wrench, simply grab the spout with the wrench and start turning it counterclockwise.

Continue to loosen the tub spout until it comes free.
