While it’s a durable material, it’s not quite as maintenance-free as the stainless part of the name may suggest. Careful cleaning on a daily basis is the key to keeping stainless steel fixtures looking new for years to come.

Check for the Grain

Brushed stainless steel needs to be cleaned along with grain and not across it. Whether scrubbing with a sponge or wiping with a microfiber to remove water residue, it’s important to identify the grain and go with it. Look at the faucet or sink from multiple angles to find the brush patterns before cleaning.

Use Diluted Vinegar

Diluted household vinegar is one of the best cleaning products for keeping stainless steel faucets and sinks looking new. It’s affordable, widely available, and won’t damage the finish while still being powerful enough to remove limescale and dirt. Mix household white vinegar with water at a 1:10 ratio of vinegar to water. Spray it on faucets and sprayers, then rinse with clean water and wipe the fixtures down with a microfiber cloth to ensure there’s no vinegar lingering to affect the finish.

Tackle Tough Spots with Baking Soda Paste

While vinegar sprays can deal with limescale and other daily messes, more stubborn debris or deposits may need a stronger cleaning touch.

Baking soda paste is a non-abrasive option that will work for brushed and polished stainless steel when used with care. Avoid using it on any matte stainless steel since it can visibly affect these finishes. Mix plain baking soda with a small amount of water, just enough to make a thick paste, and rub it on the finish with a sponge or by hand. Rinse the paste off after scrubbing to check if it lifted the mess.

Spray and Wipe Daily

Daily cleaning is the key to keeping stainless steel looking its best. Each day after using a kitchen faucet and sink set, rinse them off and wipe them down with a clean microfiber cloth. Drying off the surface at the end of the day removes hard water deposits that develop into limescale and white spots over time. A pull-down faucet or side sprayer makes this step as easy as possible.
