| October is also National Book Month so to honor it, we’ve compiled a list of classic, beloved, but eerily spooky stories! We’ve also linked each book to a free audio listening if that is more your stride. Audiobooks are great to listen to while you’re cooking or doing things around the house! |
Wuthering Heights
by Emily Bronte
Although this story is widely known as a passionate romance, it is also a story of ghastly hauntings, obsession, and revenge. As a classic gothic novel example, it perfectly sets the mood for Fall in its depictions of rainy weather, old dark buildings, and brooding characters.

Frankenstein

Frankenstein is probably one of the most well-known monsters in popular culture, but did you know that in the original book, Frankenstein is not the name of the monster but the name of the scientist? The undead green monster is actually nameless! This is an exciting, adventurous novel that explores what would happen when science goes too far as to defy ethics and morality.
Dracula

The original story of the original vampire — Dracula goes a bit differently and beyond what is commonly known. The novel is a collection of letters and recollections between multiple narrators that follow Dracula which in turn tell an adventure filled with excitement and anticipation.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
by Robert Louis Stevenson
Even in pop culture, the characters Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are not unfamiliar. Despite the high likelihood of knowing the outcome of the novella before beginning, the journey of reaching the destination makes it a worthy read. Within an unsettling house, things get increasingly uncanny and strange the narrator furthers his investigation.

Come for the great beautiful house called Manderly and stay for the drama and secrets hidden within! Rebecca is half mystery and half thriller. All the clues and facts slowly unravel to reveal a suspense-filled thrill that you won’t be able to put down.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

If you’re a fan of supernatural powers and adventure, this is the book for you. It is mysterious and peculiar as the title implies. Perhaps you’ve even seen the movie of the same name, but the book has so many more details to offer. Also, you’ll find that some points were changed in the movie and are thus different from the original book!
The Uninvited Guests
by Agatha Christie
At its core, The Uninvited Guests is a ghost story with several twists in the plot. That said, it is neither a thriller nor a horror. It contains humor that playfully carries the story through and juxtaposes disturbing moments. Although this book was written not too long ago, it is written very similarly to a gothic novel in wit and commentary. As such, it is likely you would enjoy this bok if you enjoy other Gothic novels.
MacBeth
by William Shakespeare
Arguably, any Shakespearean play would fit well with the autumnal vibe, but we think MacBeth takes the cake. Involving both witches and ghosts, this psychological tragedy is a classic story for a reason.
