How to design an apothecary-style bathroom

Apothecary-style bathrooms are a popular trend in vintage-designed spaces. These rooms are inspired by people who would prepare and sell medicine long ago. These spaces were often filled with containers of items from cotton balls and swabs to sponges and soap. Here are some tips on creating your own apothecary-style bathroom:

Vintage tub
To recreate an apothecary-style bathroom you’ll need a vintage tub. This will be one of the focal points of your room. Opt for a clawfoot tub because it is very stylish. If you select a cast iron model you’ll be able to enjoy long soaks because of the unit’s heat retaining properties.

Small tiles
Small tiles are another popular feature among vintage bathrooms. Hexagon-shaped tiles help set the tone for the room. Feature them on the walls, the floor or both. Or you can use them as a decorative touch around your vanity mirrors.

Vanity sinks
Pedestal sinks are the perfect fixture to place in a room of this design. They have a vintage style while not taking up much room, so you can place baskets on the floor around the unit. However, if you would like more counter space for your jars and containers, select a his-and-hers vanity.

Containers of all sizes
You’ll see containers, bins and boxes of all sizes in apothecary-style bathrooms. Find glass vases with lids and some without. Place handmade soaps inside one container and cotton swabs, sponges and bath salts in the others. Additionally, you’ll want to find more containers to place on the floor. Opt for a wicker or wire basket to store rolled up towels or extra toilet paper.

In addition to containers and jars, you can find an antique tiered dessert stand and bring it into the bathroom. It can house all your soaps, sponges and other toiletries.

Mirrors
Vanity mirrors are another important component in this style of room. For a vintage look, opt for a small framed mirror installed above your antique bath fixtures, like faucets and shower heads.

Botanicals
Fill the room with potted plants to bring in a natural element. Additionally, you can place single blooms of flowers in some of your empty glass containers. Then open your windows or shades to let the light into your bathroom. This will help increase your energy level while you enjoy your new space.
