Easy DIY Tips for Porcelain Sink Repair

Getting Rid of Stains
Whether installed in the bathroom or kitchen, porcelain sinks can eventually end up stained by some kind of spill that is rich in pigments. Prompt cleaning should keep most materials from staining the porcelain, but drips or splatters that linger may leave a visible discoloration. Scrub the sink with a dish sponge and mild dish soap first to remove any dirt or grime. Then soak a paper towel with vinegar or hydrogen peroxide and lay it over the stained area. Replacing the paper towel if it dries to soak the area for at least a few hours. Rinse and scrub with the dish sponge again to see if the stain has faded. Some stains may not fade without risking damage to the finish.
Using Epoxy on Chips
Epoxy repairs kits are ideal for covering up small chips and deeper scratches that mar the surface of a porcelain sink. These imperfections are particularly common in kitchen sinks where dropped pans and sharp utensils risk damage on a daily basis. Scrub the damaged area with a dish sponge and dish soap, then rinse and let the area dry. Mix the two-part epoxy product and brush it on the chipped area. Use layers to build up if the chip is deep, allowing the layers to dry completely between applications. Let the epoxy cure for at least 24 hours before using the sink.
Applying Touch-Up Paint
Touch-up paint for porcelain works well for sinks in particular because it’s rarely exposed to as much wear and tear as in a bathtub. It’s helpful for blending epoxy repairs into the rest of the sink, but it can also be used on its own for covering scratches and other minor surface imperfections. Follow the same process as for epoxy, from cleaning to waiting 24 hours.
