Kingston Brass, Calif. – Aug. 28, 2018 – As an increasing amount of the nation’s aging population opts to remain in their own homes rather than go to an assisted living facility, prompting more homeowners to make “aging in place” upgrades, Kingston Brass is recognizing the need to do more for senior citizens and those with physical injuries or disabilities.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines “aging in place” as “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age, income or ability level.”
Kingston Brass prefers to think of it as “thriving in place,” and is sure its customers will think so as well when it unveils the new ADAscape Collection in the coming weeks.
A recent report from AARP shows that 90 percent of those 65 and older prefer to age in place.
A National Association of Home Builders survey found that aging-in-place home improvement projects such as adding task lighting, curb-less showers, grab bars and non-slip floors as well as widening doorways have been on the rise. In 2017, 80 percent of remodeling companies were contracted to make such upgrades – a jump from only 68 percent in 2013.
“Low-cost, simple modifications to help people be safer and more comfortable in their homes, such as installing grab bars and higher toilets, continue to be the most popular aging-in-place remodeling projects,” said 2017 NAHB Remodelers Chair Dan Bawden.
While Kingston Brass’ vast offering of plumbing merchandise already includes thousands of appliances and accessories that meet requirements set by the Americans with Disabilities Act, it is expanding its line of products that are meant to help make the lives of the ADA community and the country’s aging population easier.
The new ADAscape Collection will primarily comprise of wall-mounted shower seats, which are meant to provide a safer bathing experience. Shower seats help reduce the risk of slipping and make washing easier for disabled persons who have back problems or trouble standing.
For the past 20 years, Kingston Brass has operated under the belief that aesthetics and functionality aren’t mutually exclusive. That sentiment is certainly found throughout all of its products including its grab bars, which are also geared toward the ADA community.
Kingston Brass has a proven track record of providing the most decorative grab bars in the plumbing marketplace, understanding that such products should be just as eye-appealing as they are helpful and practical for seniors.
“We have a huge selection of decorative grab bars,” Kingston Brass Technical Consultant Tony Martin noted, adding, “we felt (the grab bars) didn’t need to look institutional.”
As part of its commitment to provide ADA friendly products, Kingston Brass is also working to include L-shaped grab bars, or 90-degree grab bars, into the mix. These 90-degree grab bars are designed to not only assist individuals when pulling themselves up from a sitting or lying down position, but to steady themselves as well.
