What Type of Faucet Fits My Vanity Sink?

Selecting a new faucet is an easy process, but only after narrowing down the options by mounting type. Many larger vanity sinks feature the popular widespread mounting style. Yet it’s also possible for a vanity sink to use a single hole or centerset faucet instead. Here’s how to determine whether your sink uses a widespread bathroom faucet or not.
Separate Taps and Faucet
Examine the current faucet on the sink, or the faucet style modeled on pictures of the one you are planning to get. If the valves are distinctly mounted separately from the spout on the sink or vanity, it’s definitely a widespread faucet. Centerset faucets usually feature a solid base connecting the handles and spout into one larger piece, while single-hole faucets obviously combine everything into one unit. Freestanding valves mounted on the sink or vanity indicate the need for a matching widespread faucet.
Number of Holes
Widespread and mini-widespread faucets also require three holes for mounting, since each valve is fed separately by its own water line. The hole in the middle holds the spout and connects the two lines from the valves for mixing. This is the easiest way to tell if a vanity requires a single-hole faucet. Centerset faucets also feature a three-hole mounting pattern. Homeowners can tell if a three-hole sink needs a centerset , mini-widespread or widespread faucet by measuring the spread of the holes.
Eight-Inch Spread or More
Measure the center to center distance between the two farthest-spaced holes to get the total spread of the mounting pattern. Widespread faucets start at an eight-inch spread and can also be adapted to fit wider patterns, since the parts all separately mount.
Then of course, there is also mini-widespread faucets just like widespread faucets but proportioned to fit on a 4″ Center to Center and as a last resort you can always install a centerset in that same space.
