Grab a bathroom accessory set to get a matching look for all the towel bars, hooks, rings, and related fixtures at once. While a matching set may eliminate issues with shopping around, the homeowner still has a little work to do in placing and installing the fixtures. Here are a few helpful tips to ensure each part of the set ends up in the best possible place.
Each bar, hook, ring, and toilet paper holder in the bathroom set requires a different placement.
- Towel bars: Locate at least one right next to or above the sink. Keep bars and rings at least 48 to 52 inches off the floor to give plenty of space for the largest towels.
- Hooks for robes and towels: While they’re usually found on the back of the door, these accessories are best mounted near a shower or tub instead. Hang them high, usually at least 60 to 65 inches, to ensure full-length robes don’t drag the floor.
- Towel rings: Place them near the sink or sinks. Since these accessories are generally only used for hand towels and washcloths, they’re more flexible for mounting height.
- Toilet paper holder: Avoid the urge to locate the holder on a wall behind or in front of the toilet. If there’s no wall to mount the holder right next to the toilet, try a free-standing holder. Aim for placement around 6 inches from the side of the bowl and 25 to 32 inches off the floor.
Installing Accessories Over Tile
Installing screw-mounted bars, rings, and other accessories are simple enough with drywall or wood board walls. When installing a bathroom accessory set over tiled walls or in tiled areas, a little more care is needed to avoid cracking and damage to the walls. Make a square of multiple layers of masking tape over each spot marked for drilling to keep the drill bit from jumping across the surface and marking it. Diamond tipped drill bits are a must, along with slow and steady pressure. There’s always a chance of chipping or cracking tile, so keeping some spares on hand is helpful.
